A delighted Martin Allen said he was a "proud man" as Gillingham helped him celebrate his 47th birthday with a surprise 2-1 win against Championship side Bristol City in one of the Capital One League Cup first round's upsets.
Skipper Danny Kedwell's penalty and a debut goal for Ben Strevens set-up the win and Allen said: "It's not easy when you come away to a club two leagues higher with some quality players, but we defended the pressure as a team, and helped to get a first good win under our belts."
He revealed: "Both goals were down to hours of hard work and dedication, it wasn't off the cuff.
"The penalty came from a move we had worked on in training, and Charlie Allen has been practicising that corner religiously, and the players got their rewards.
"A couple of the lads got cramp at the end, a result of the effort they had put in."
Allen added: "The victory is made absolutely sweeter because it's my birthday, and there were family and friends here to see it, it was a great win and I am very proud.
"They were all here, people who are very special, and look after and help me. I think though the most important thing is how happy the squad were after the game.
"They all appreciated the supporters who travelled a long way to see us.
"At my age I don't really look forward to birthdays, but to come to Bristol City and win is very special, and the icing on the cake."
Deon Burton has signed but is still waiting international clearance, which should be completed on Thursday.
Jack Payne missed out through illness, while Joe Martin was excused due to becoming a father.
Allen also revealed that the club could make another signing as soon as Thursday, with chairman Paul Scally, who was at Ashton Gate to see the win, in talks with a player.
