Manager Martin Allen was delighted to see another committed performance from his Gillingham team rewarded with a win.

After previous friendly victories over Dagenham, Dartford, Royal Engineers, Ebbsfleet and Dover the Gills knocked over Championship side Charlton on Saturday thanks to Danny Kedwell’s first-half goal.

Gills boss Allen highlighted a few areas where his team can improve but was pleased to see his side claim another win.

He said: “It’s good for our supporters to see us win a game and keep a clean sheet, against the local rivals, that’s always nice.

“The supporters saw a few new players playing as well. But the players deserve the credit because they are the ones who put all the hard work into practice.

“We tried to play a bit of football but they played a diamond system in midfield, which made it difficult for us to pass it through midfield. That is something we have to look at. If opposition do that how do we break that down?

“But overall it was a really good team performance. The lads who came off the bench all played well as well. It was a good all-round effort from everyone.”

A clean sheet against a side who started with Bradley Wright-Phillips upfront was a welcome bonus.

“We restricted them to very few chances,” said Allen. “The players were committed and hard working to the team ethic. We played deep in the second half but we took off a forward so we could have another midfield player because they had an extra midfield player every time.

“It was important to have discipline and defend as a unit to not let them through. The players did that. We don’t want to play like that every week but it was good.

“We saw a good performance from all our players and we saw an 18-year-old playing in the first team who had come through the system after being released from Charlton when he was 14, the boy Dack. We had another boy playing centre-back who has come through the system Davies and that was good.

“We had a bit of sunshine, no hassle, no stress, no yellow cards and a good disciplined performance. It was a good day for the club.”
