Gillingham boss Martin Allen had no complaints following a tough match at Cheltenham on Saturday.

His team picked up numerous injuries and lost their long unbeaten away record in League 2.

“It was a hard-fought game, as you would expect,” said Allen (pictured).

“Two top teams in this division and we knew it was going to be full-on, there was no doubt about it.

“No complaints about the referee, no complaints about the tackles.

“I thought the lads had a real go. It’s a difficult place to play, especially after getting promotion last week. Cheltenham’s record is very good against some of the best teams in the division.

“Our players stood up to it and battled against it. We had a few half opportunities and I thought our lads had a real go. That’s only the second game all season we have lost away from home and I thought we did all right.

“They were very difficult conditions out there, with the wind and the rain, which made it extremely difficult for both teams. We wanted to win, we went there to win.

“They always give their best. We had several players struggling (with injury) but that’s no excuse. I thought Cheltenham did really well and they were really fired up and motivated.

“Our lads do keep going but let’s not take anything away from Cheltenham.”

The Gills were backed by 1,449 fans at Whaddon Road and Allen was thrilled with the support.

“Our supporters sung their hearts out right through to the very end,” he said.

“They have seen our players give everything once again for our club. It would have been great to get a goal at the end but now we look forward to next Saturday. Win and we will be champions.”
