Matt Fish scored the goal to take Gillingham eight points clear at the top of League 2, but insists it’s far from over.

A 25-yard strike from the defender was enough to hand the Gills maximum points at Priestfield which puts them in a commanding position with just five weeks of the season remaining.

Fish said: “We’ll never say (we’ve made it) until it’s done. It was a great result but the other teams didn’t play. It was important for us to open up a gap and it’s better to have the points than the games in hand.

“We move on to Fleetwood and then Rotherham and once those two games are gone, it will be a little clearer with four games to go.”

It was Fish’s third goal for the Gills this season and fourth for the club in total.

He said: “It’s probably not the best ever, I scored a good goal back in the youth days but that was a long time ago. As a pro, that’s been my best goal.

“I have had a couple of chances, like I did against Rochdale and I like cutting in on to my left foot, I am confident on that foot. I hit it sweet and it won us the game.

“Even though we defended for quite a lot of the second half, it still didn’t feel like we were going to concede a goal."
