Charlie Lee was one of the lucky 80,000 fans to witness a memorable night of Olympic glory for Great Britain on Saturday night.

The Gills midfielder (pictured) was taken off early in the match against Charlton so he could watch the action at the Olympic Stadium.

And boss Martin Allen believes his players will give him more if he treats them well.

Allen said: "Charlie came to me and said ‘gaffer, I’ve got a ticket to go to the Olympics’ and he wanted to get off early. I took him off and I said ‘go, now’.

"If I treat them nicely and look after them, as long as they do well for us, and we treat them well as people then hopefully they will do their best for us, the supporters and the club.

"It isn’t very often the Olympics come around and Charlie has lost a lot of weight, he has shown great commitment and he is funny. I have really enjoyed his company."

And it was Lee’s long throw that set up the winner on Saturday.

"That long throw is like a javelin isn’t it when he throws it in?" said Allen.

"When he first came in I thought he was going to do the shot put he was so big!"
