Charlie Lee says he is determined to produce more match-winning performances for Gillingham next season.
The midfielder, who scored both goals in the win over Morecambe on Saturday, admits the start of the season was not a good one for him, but he came good in the end.
Lee (pictured) said: “It took me a little while to settle in. I was confident it wouldn’t, but maybe I was a bit over-confident.
“I came into this season maybe not playing as well as I should have done at the start. I have lifted my game in the second half of the season and I have to take that into the next one.
“I believe that if I am playing well I can do real good things for this club. I just need to keep my head down, work hard and hopefully we can get some success.”
A win on Saturday, however, was unable to mask the disappointment that the squad felt after missing out on promotion.
“We were so confident going into the season but when you get so many new players coming in maybe you have to expect less. We are full of players who expect the highs from ourselves and we are disappointed.
“The fans will be disappointed but going into next season now, having all played together, we look like we can do things in the future and hopefully the fans will stick with us.
“The chairman has been brilliant and he spent a lot of money getting good players in. He is frustrated like the fans but he knows what he has here and he knows what we can do next year.
“It is hard for him, but he has confidence in us and we need to prove it going into next season.”
Lee picked up his 16th booking of the season on Saturday – something he readily admits needs omitting from his game.
“I really didn’t deserve that one (on Saturday) and I think it’s about the only one I was harsh on,” he admits.
“It was a strong tackle but I think it was fair and I won the ball. Sometimes referees make mistakes.
“You can’t get booked 16 times in a season, it’s not right and I will sort that out for next year. I will get the odd one because of the way I play, but I can’t have that many again.”
