Martin Allen admitted that when he signed David Wright on loan from Crystal Palace last month it was unlikely the midfielder would win any man-of-the-match awards.
The 32-year-old arrived from the Championship to provide Gillingham with a player to sit in front of the back four and in Wright’s own words, "to destroy things."
It’s an unglamorous job but one that has helped turn Gillingham’s defence into the tightest in League 2.
In the six games he has played, Gillingham have conceded just three times. He may not be getting the headlines, as Gills boss Allen predicted but his impact can’t be underestimated.
"It’s never going to be a role within the team that gets headlines," said Wright.
"Fans aren’t going to walk away saying ‘this one’s brilliant’ but it’s a role that every team needs and I am more than happy to play that part.
"I am good at destroying things and more than happy to then give the ball to the boys who are technically gifted, creative and let them get on with the job they do.
"I don’t think anyone is going to leave the stadium and say he was absolutely brilliant.
"I am not about to throw in 14 Lollipops (Ronaldo step-overs) and six Cruyff-turns. It’s never going to happen.
"I am comfortable with what my job is within the team."
Wright could make his final Gills appearance Saturday. His initial loan expires this weekend and talks were ongoing during the week about an extension.
"I don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes but I prefer that," Wright said.
"I’m a football player, I let others discuss those things.
