Gillingham manager Martin Allen was delighted with Jack Payne’s goal at Barnet on Saturday and believes there is much more to come from him.
Former Arsenal assistant manager Pat Rice was among the scouts at Underhill on Saturday, and must have gone away impressed with the quality of his finish.
Allen said: "I think Jack can adapt to the role we have given him as a holding defensive midfield player, and grow into it.
"There is so much more to build on with him, goals, assists, creative play, and getting more control of the ball, which we will keep working on as the season goes along.
"It was a great strike. We have asked him to play more advanced at times, push on and use his quality in his play."
Payne could face competition for that place in the future, with the Gills being heavily linked with a loan more for Crystal Palace's David Wright. The 32-year-old has made just one start for the Eagles this season and is understood to be seeking first team football.
