Luke Rooney celebrates with Ian Hendon after equalising at Torquay

We all felt coming away from Torquay on Saturday with a draw was not a bad result but now with the defeat against Chesterfield, it’s important we get back to winning ways on Saturday.

Aldershot are in good form since their new manager came in, so we know it’s going to be another difficult game. But if we can create the kind of chances we had on Tuesday, I’m sure we will be more ruthless.

Everyone is still positive and we are in touching distance of the play-offs and third spot.

It was a little disappointing not to get anything on Tuesday against the leaders. It was arguably one of our better performances, especially at home this season, where I felt we passed the ball well and created numerous chances.

Unfortunately, we didn’t take those chances due to their keeper making some excellent saves and also our quality and composure in front of goal should have been better.

Chesterfield showed why they are deservedly top of the league, as they soaked up all the pressure we put them under, then ruthlessly took their chances when they got them.

We can take the positives out of the game. We passed it well and created lots of chances but to get where we want to be at the end of the season, we need to be more ruthless in front of goal.

I don’t think many people would argue that we could and should have won quite comfortably.

One bit of concern over the last couple of games is that we have not started games too well and conceded early goals in both.

Against Torquay on Saturday, we conceded a poor goal. Yes, Alan Julian knows that he should have done better with the shot but we were sloppy with the ball in the lead up to the goal.

Before games we always say that you have to ‘earn the right to play’. That means doing the basic things right, working hard and getting yourself settled into the game.

After the poor start at Torquay, we battled our way back into the game and got the equaliser. It was nice to get it late on as it was a bit of payback from when they scored against us at home.

Luke Rooney came off the bench to get the goal and by his celebration, you can see he really enjoyed it (not sure about him jumping into the arms of Ian Hendon though!!). He certainly can be an impact player for us and gives us something different in the way that he is positive in his ability and not afraid to take a shot on.

He is a young lad with obvious talent. He needs to make sure he continues to listen and learn from the coaches and other players, who are trying to help him develop his game. I’m sure we will see much more of him.
