Lloyd Owusu will be given a trial at Gillingham this week as Andy Hessenthaler continues to look for additional support up-front.
Cody McDonald and Adebayo Akinfenwa are Hessenthaler’s current in-form strike duo but the squad lack strength in depth.
Owusu (pictured), 34, is a free agent after leaving Australian A-League club Adelaide United in December and has a proven track-record in front of goal.
His former clubs include Brentford, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday. He recently had a trial at Port Vale but they declined to offer the experienced striker a deal.
Hessenthaler said: “He has good experience, he’s been around clubs and he can score goals.”
And Hessenthaler is hoping to see the striker in action when they take on Colchester United in a behind-closed-doors friendly tomorrow (Tuesday) at Maldon.
“I don’t know whether he wants to risk playing, it’s a tricky one,” said Hessenthaler.
“When you go looking for a club it’s a risk because you don’t want to get injured. It’s up to him.
“I would like to see him in a game because on his day he is a handful and a very good centre forward.”
The Gills have decided to let former Crawley striker Liam Marum look elsewhere for a contract.
“We’ve let him go - he wasn’t for us,” said the Gills boss.
