Gillingham boss Mark Stimson finally got his man when Kevin Maher signed a two-year deal this week.
Stimson has been tracking the 32-year-old for the last 12 months and agreed terms on Tuesday afternoon, with Maher (pictured) putting pen to paper 24 hours later.
Stimson said: "He will be a fantastic signing for us. I've often talked about the need to add that bit of experience to the team and that's exactly what Kevin will bring to the side.
"He can sit in front of the back four in the type of role that Josh Wright filled at the end of last season. it gives me the option to use that formation if we want to this season."
Maher, who played in League 1 for Oldham last season, said: "I would have liked to have stayed here (at Gillingham) last season but at my age I wanted to play at the highest level for as long as I can.
"I kept in touch with some of the lads and I watched a few of the matches last season. I was really impressed with their style of play, particularly at Wembley."
Maher becomes Gillingham's first signing of the summer.
