Strikers Stefan Payne and Andrew White are vying for time on the pitch to prove their worth to Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler.
The pair arrived following impressive recommendations and now former Fulham striker Payne and White, who recently finished an apprenticeship with Reading, want to get goals and force their way into the manager’s starting XI plans.
"I’m coming down for first team football and I want to make an impact," said Payne, who missed the first two pre-season friendlies with a groin injury picked up in training.
He was released from a two-year contract at Fulham, having failed to make the first team when he was restricted to reserve team football.
Westerham-based striker Payne (pictured) joined Fulham for a reported £25,000 plus add-ons after an explosive showing at Sutton, displaying great pace and some classy finishing. He was there for just a season after leaving Croydon.
White, like Payne, is desperate to impress and knows goals will do the talking.
"Goals are what strikers are here for," he said. "Even if we don’t play well, we just want to score.
"If I do get into the team I want to try and get some goals and hopefully if I do I want to show what I’ve got."
Both Payne and White face competition up front. Simeon Jackson will be difficult to shift, providing the Gills can keep hold of him, while Dennis Oli, Mark McCammon, Luke Rooney and Andy Barcham are also aiming for a forward role.
