Gillingham’s fourth pre-season game ended in defeat as they were beaten with two second half goals at Welling.

The Blue Square South opponents gave Gillingham a tough time and goals from Sanchez Ming and Jake Hobbs sealed the win.

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson once more handed trialists Jordan Parkes, Sam Long and Rashid Yussuff 45 minutes each as he continues to monitor the trio.

Stimson gave keeper Simon Royce and defender Garry Richards full games, but for the rest it was another half each, as they attempted to win a place in the team on Tuesday night at Bishop’s Stortford.

The Gills boss will give his best pre-season XI a start in the mid-week clash but at Welling there were few that made a mark on the game.

There were no goals in the opening half at Park View Road, with Adam Miller’s long range effort being saved early on by keeper Charlie Mitten. On 21 minutes Curtis Weston lost out when he was through one on one with the Welling goalie.

Royce had to be alert to make saves from James Lawson and Dean Cracknell but he was beaten on 64 minutes. A vicious shot from Tony Finn was parried but Ming was first to react and he struck home to open the scoring.

The Wings got a second goal on 83 minutes when Hobbs, a former Blackpool striker who had a game for Gills' reserves last season, left Long in his wake and slotted the ball past Royce.

Gills: (First half): Royce, Fuller, Parkes, King, Richards, Payne, Palmer, Weston, McCammon, Miller, Barcham. (Second half): Royce, Long, Richards, Wynter, Nutter, Maher, Lewis, Yussuff, Rooney, Pugh, Oli. Subs not used: Essam, Beckles, Rance, Julian. Attendance: 510.
