Gillingham's hopes of signing Darren Dennehy were made easier after the defender negotiated a release from Cardiff City.
The Irishman had a year remaining with the Welsh club but is now a free agent, although the Gills will have competition for his signature.
Gills chairman Paul Scally said: "We have put a proposition to Darren and he is considering it.
"It was difficult for him to remove himself from Cardiff but he has now done that and we are in discussions with him.
"We would like to think he will come here but he has other opportunities as well. He will obviously do what is right for him."
Dennehy impressed during a loan spell last season where he made 19 appearances.
