Gillingham have been drawn away to Bristol City in the first round of the Capital One Cup.
City finished 20th in the Championship last season.
The two sides last met in April 2007, at Priestfield, with the Gills running out 1-0 winners. City have, however, won the last three meetings on their own turf.
Capital One are the latest sponsors of the League Cup, which was previously known as the Carling Cup.
The first round draw - split between northern and southern teams - was seeded with all League 2, League 1 and Championship sides included, barring Bolton and Blackburn.
Both clubs will enter at the second round stage along with 13 Premier League clubs.
The seven Premier League clubs who are in European competitions next season will enter at the third round stage.
Gillingham could have faced clubs such as Birmingham, Wolves, Leicestser or Cardiff City in the first round.
A date for the match will be agreed shortly but first round games will precede their forthcoming League 2 campaign.
The first weekend of the Football League season is on August 18 - a week later than normal due to the final of the Olympic Football competition the previous weekend.
Clubs could, however, opt to play their Capital One Cup games on that weekend, if both clubs agree but most are likely to be scheduled for Tuesday, August 14.
Gillingham faced Brighton last season in the first round at the AMEX Stadium and were narrowly beaten, with only a contentious second half penalty separating the sides.
The Gills were also eliminated at the first round stage in the previous season, losing to Norwich City at Carrow Road.
The fixtures for the Football League season will be announced on Monday morning.
