Trialist Jack Obersteller could make the grade in the Football League, according to his current manager.
Gillingham had Welling left-back Obersteller on trial last week and he played 45 minutes for the Gills in the friendly defeat at Bromley on Saturday.
Welling boss Jamie Day said: "Potentially he is good enough. He has all the right attributes to be a Football League player.
"He has been at League clubs before but mentally he is probably better prepared to go into it now.
"He is quite a quiet boy but he has matured a little bit as a player now."
Day has stated that he will not stand in the way of any of his squad who wish to play in the Football League.
However, the Wings would require a transfer fee for the 22-year-old who is under contract at Park View Road after he signed a new one-year deal in the close season.
Obersteller (pictured) started his career at Millwall and has spent time at Wycombe, Grays and Exeter before he joined the Wings in November 2009.
"If Gillingham want him and he progresses then I don’t want to stop him," said Day.
Obersteller featured 42 times for Welling last season, and impressed Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler and coach Nicky Southall when they watched him play against Ebbsfleet in March.
Day added: "Jack did extremely well for us last year and deserved to be given a trial. If he takes that chance then I don’t think we should stand in his way.
"They have to offer something. If they make an offer then we’d sit down and make the final decision.
"We won’t stop players progressing as that’s what we are about as well. We want to get good young players in who haven’t quite made it at the level they think they can play at and it’s down to us to work on them."
