Gillingham players and officials are in sombre mood after the club's youth team manager suffered a sudden heart attack.
Darren Hare had just returned from scouting duties at Southend's game with Oxford United on Tuesday night when he fell ill.
He was taken by ambulance to the William Harvey Hospital, Ashford, where he has since undergone an operation.
The 43-year-old is said to be stable and has been talking to his family who have been at his bedside.
However, Darren's brother-in-law and the Gills' first team manager Andy Hessenthaler admitted it may be some time until he is fit enough to return to coaching the side.
He said: "It's been a tough few days and there's a very sombre mood around Priestfield at the moment, especially among the younger players.
"The first team boys are worried and he's a family member of mine as well, so our best wishes are with him.
"He's a fantastic coach and we hope to see him back at the club soon."
Gillingham's youth team's planned fixture at Brighton and Hove Albion this Saturday has been called off because the squad are too upset to play.
Brian Bull, manager of the under-16s squad, is to take charge of the youth team until Hare is able to return.
