Andy Hessenthaler hailed the "tremendous" effort from his team after they finally ended their away-day hell.
After 34 games without an away win, including nine this season under Hessenthaler's management, they finally left an away ground victorious.
Gills boss Hessenthaler said: "It was a tremendous effort from the players.
"We carried it on from last week where although we got beat, the performance was fantastic against Crewe, especially with 10 men.
"The spirit in the camp and the work ethic in training has paid off and the players were outstanding. We actually made it hard for ourselves as I think we should have gone in further in front at half-time.
"We have got a very good squad of players. We brought the three boys in on loan and that's freshened things up. They've done very well and it's pleasing.
"We've got the monkey off our back now and we have to look forward."
