Danny Spiller is mobbed by his teammates after bringing the Gills back to 3-3, only for Bury to snatch a 5-4 win

Before Saturday's game at Gigg Lane our panel of Gillingham fans were split about whether their team would beat Bury and break their away-day jinx, but nobody could have foreseen what was to come in the nine-goal epic. Below is a selection of views.

"I still can’t quite take in what I saw on Saturday. Firstly, awful team selection. The centre-back pairing of Matt Lawrence and Tony Sinclair, supported by Chris Palmer and Barry Fuller, worked very well at Morecambe last week and we didn’t concede.

"So why on earth Hessenthaler decided to bring back Josh Gowling and John Nutter and move Barry Fuller to centre midfield, all in an attempt to replace Andy Barcham, I’ll never know. Once again, playing Akinfenwa on his own up front again didn’t work and when he did have support we ended up scoring four.

"But the starting eleven, regardless of selection issues, just didn’t perform and an atrocious first-half display along with 90 minutes of kamikaze defending was incredibly concerning.

"We still haven’t led a game and we’ve had only one decent first-half performance in five matches. For all of the encouragement, we’re now under pressure to get results."

MALCOLM SMITH

"For entertainment value this was worth the money, but to lose a nine-goal ‘thriller’ really isn’t that thrilling.

"To let in five goals in any match is unacceptable and the manner in which we lost them makes it even worse.

"The first half defending was comical, the first goal would not have looked out of place in a pantomime.

"Credit to Hess (pictured) for changing it up at half-time but how Gowling was favoured ahead of Lawrence is a mystery to me?

"Gills went on to win the second half showing how good we can be but poor defending cost us yet again as Sinclair, Gowling and McCammon all had chances to intervene but failed to do so.

"On the plus side we showed great team spirit and scored some good goals but sadly it all counts for nothing if we let in five!"

"I don’t think anyone could have predicted that result!

"The last time the Gills visited Gigg Lane, it was a 4-0 win for the Shakers, but I never thought I’d see nine goals the next time the two sides met up north.

"The first half was a nightmare for Josh Gowling, as his back pass towards Cronin was too short and allowed Andy Bishop to capitalise for our first goal, and then his clumsy push on Bishop gave us the penalty for the second.

"The second half was nothing short of unbelievable, with seven goals in 26 minutes. The double substitution for Gillingham was influential, with Mark McCammon (pictured) making an immediate difference.

"Adebayo Akinfenwa always causes Bury problems – he’s a class act upfront. A nightmare to play against, but a hero to have in your team.

"We next meet again in February – will we go one better with 10 goals?"
