Gills manager Mark Stimson to rest key players

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson insists his team will be going all-out to win on Saturday’s game at Rochdale.

Both teams are already guaranteed a League 2 play-off place and could face each other again in next week’s two-legged semi-final and Stimson knows it would be foolish to risk his star players.

He will leave some of his key men on the bench – or even at home – but that won’t stop his side aiming for maximum points against an out-of-form Rochdale side.

Stimson (pictured right) said: "We want to try and stay in this fifth position, which will allow us to have the second leg of the play-offs at home.

"We’ll be looking to put out a team that will get us a result and will give one or two people a chance to stake their claim for the bigger games to come."

Player-of-the-year Simon King is likely to be one of those left on the sidelines and Andy Barcham could also be rested.

"The bench has been strong recently and it will be really strong this weekend," Stimson added.

"I had a conversation with those players who are going to be left out and gave them my reasons. Although they wanted to play, they understand.

What will be decided after Saturday’s fixtures is who Gillingham face in the semi-final play-off, either Rochdale again or Dagenham & Redbridge, and whether they start on Thursday night, May 7, home or away.

The second leg is next Sunday, with a 6.30pm kick-off.

The Gills head into the game unbeaten in their last three but Stimson warned: "The last three results have been good but Saturday could be a little messy.

"That’s understandable as we’re focusing on the following week."

The Gills will have Adam Miller back after a two-game ban but young strikers Luis Cumbers and Andy Pugh, who both recently ended loan spells in the Blue Square Premier, are carrying knocks and are unlikely to feature. Youngster Jack Payne is also sidelined by injury.

* Gillingham have told defender Sean Clohessy that his contract won’t be renewed and former captain Andrew Crofts is set to follow him out of the club.

Both players have been out on loan during the second half of the season and their contracts are set to expire.
