Gills players offer charity training sessions

Youngsters are being given the chance to train with Gillingham Football Club and help raise cash for a children’s cancer charity.

First team players will be passing on their skills to boys and girls aged 12 to 14 at their training ground at Beechings Cross in Gillingham.

The event has been organised following the death of 13-year-old Aaron Basden.

The football-mad teenager from Chatham lost his year-long battle with cancer last month.

Just days after his death, Gillingham players wore black arms bands and held a minute’s silence in memory of Aaron at their home match against Aldershot.

The training session will cost £10 per child, with all the money going to CLIC Sargent, the charity which helped Aaron and his family throughout his illness.

Aaron’s mum Carla said: “Football was a big part of Aaron’s life. West Ham was his team but he also supported Gillingham and went to watch them lots of times with his grandad.

“Aaron would be honoured that the Gills are supporting CLIC Sargent and the training session will help to raise awareness of the charity.

“CLIC Sargent supported us through everything, from when Aaron was first diagnosed, to after his death. They were there 24/7.”

The training session takes place on Thursday, April 16, from 1pm to 3pm at Beechings Cross, off Langton Way, Gillingham. Places are limited. To book call Dan Powell at CLIC Sargent on 01273 897381 or email Dan.Powell@clicsargent.org.uk
