An 11-year-old girl hit by a car in Sittingbourne yesterday remains critically ill in a medically-induced coma.

The youngster was struck by a Peugeot 306 near Sutton House in London Road, between the junctions with Burley Road and Chalkwell Road at 4.05pm.

She was airlifted to King's College Hospital with head and hip injuries.

The girl underwent surgery last night and is now in a medically-induced coma until at least Thursday.

The air ambulance and firefighters were also called and the Kent Police serious collision investigation unit was sent to the scene.

Police closed off the road while medics treated the child whose mother was by her side. It was re-opened at 6.45pm.

The incident is being investigated by the police's serious collision investigation unit.

Kent Police had earlier wrongly stated the girl was six.
