A Kent school has won an award for global awareness for the help it is giving to a school in West Africa.

Charles Dickens School in Broadstairs has been presented with the International Schools Award for global awareness by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Students from the school's Tavistock College raised more than £2,000 from a range of events. The money will help set up a community skills centre at Pakalinding Upper Basic School, in Mansakonkoa, Gambia.

The link between the two schools will be further reinforced when teacher Tammy Debling visits the Gambian school, which has about 1,000 students aged 11 to 14.

The Charles Dickens School has also received the Investors in People award which head teacher Andrew Olsson said reflects the school’s investment in staff development.
