The world’s biggest fundraising swim will be making a splash at plenty of pools around the county.

Swimathon 2012 hits 650 pools nationwide from Friday, April 27 to Sunday, April 29.

In its 25th year, the event has joined forces with Marie Curie Cancer Care, Sport Relief and the BBC’s and British Swimming’s Big Splash.

Swimmers for Marie Curie Cancer can choose from the 5k, 2.5k or team 5k challenges while Big Splash Mile for Sport Relief fundraisers can take part individually or as part of a team to complete the mile.

Since Swimathon began 500,000 swimmers have swum the equivalent of more than 24 times round the world, raising £36 million for charity.

Swimathon president Duncan Goodhew, pictured left, said: “We all know that 2012 will be a very special year for sport in Britain. In our 25th anniversary year, we’d love to add to the 500,000 people who have used the event down the years to dive into pools up and down the country.

“Teaming up with the Big Splash is a not only a great way to help make this happen, but should also boost the total funds raised for both Marie Curie Cancer Care and Sport Relief.”

Swimathon has raised money for charities including Macmillan Cancer support, NSPCC, The British Heart Foundation, The Prince’s Trust and most recently, Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation.
