Lance Cronin is likely to be offered a contract this week after impressing during his two-week trial at Gillingham.
The goalkeeper is one of four trialists who joined Gillingham on their four-day trip to France and is heading the list of those manager Andy Hessenthaler wants to sign.
Cronin (pictured) is seen as an ideal candidate to push Alan Julian for the number one shirt having impressed in recent years at Conference club Ebbsfleet.
"I think he will certainly challenge Alan for that number one jersey and that’s what Alan needs," said Hessenthaler.
"He has certainly done enough in my eyes and I need to sit down with him and the chairman and see if we can do something."
Also hoping for an offer is defender Tony Sinclair, midfielder Danny Spiller and former Ajax man Stanley Aborah.
Hessenthaler said: "We will really know where we’re at on Tuesday night when we play against better opposition and in front of our own fans.
"Sinclair hasn’t done a lot wrong again at the back, Spills works hard and Stanley has ability. We’ll certainly be making some decisions in the early part of next week."
The Gills boss has held no further talks with defender Chris Perry, who would be a major coup if he could tempt the former Spurs defender to Priestfield.
"He’s a player we had a tentative conversation with. At the moment there is no further development on that," he said.
