Two of Kent’s oldest grammar schools - Chatham House and Clarendon House in Ramsgate - may be rebuilt as single sex schools on one site under the Building Schools for the Future programme.

Governors stress that “amalgamation is categorically not the case” but say they are considering a Local Education Authority proposal to co-locate on a campus on the current town centre Chatham House site in Chatham Street.

A statement issued by both sets of governors says: “The two schools would remain as separate entities, retaining both their individual strengths and traditions.

“They would continue to offer a choice of single sex education.”

They say the LEA proposal would solve existing problems faced by both schools of outdated Victorian buildings and lack of space.

With two sixth forms of around 500 students, it would offer a far greater range of courses and subject specialities.

Governors add: “We are currently discussing various co-operation options but no decision has yet been taken.

“One option could be a federation of two highly successful grammar schools that would form a powerful force for educational excellence.”

Further announcements from the governors are not expected until the new school year.
