A 76-year-old grandmother has been left badly shaken after she was mugged for just £2 while walking along the street.

Evelyn Swift was returning home from Gillingham town centre when the thug pounced out of an alleyway.

She had her purse snatched from her hand before the mugger fled along Lock Street at about 2pm on Saturday.

Mrs Swift was only carrying £4 in her purse at the time it was stolen, but the purse and two pound coins were discovered shortly after the mugging.

Mrs Swift’s daughter, Victoria Brand, said: “She’s such a lovely person but this has left her absolutely distraught. How can anyone mug an old lady as she walks down the street? It's disgusting."

The mugger is described as around 5ft 3in, Afro-Caribbean with a thick black moustache and Afro hairstyle and he was wearing a long black coat.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
