Gran's cake starts oven fire

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a home in Albert Road, Chatham, after a grandmother set her oven alight while cooking a Christmas cake.

A crew from Medway Fire Station attended the call at her home just after 1pm on Saturday when they found a small fire in the kitchen.

A spokesman said: "The woman was trying to cook a Christmas cake with her grandchildren but it looks like some plastic utensils were left in the oven by mistake; this is what caused the fire.

"Luckily the woman got the children out quickly, even though she didn't have any smoke alarms. So while we were there we fitted two in her home."
