Green Flag Awards: Kent parks recognised

Kent's parks have been recognised for their excellence with more than 30 Green Flag Awards.

The scheme, which has been running for 22 years, rewards well-managed, clean and safe parks.

This year, the county received 36 awards, beating last year's total of 33.

Winners include Lullingstone Country Park in Eynsford, Mote Park in Maidstone, and Reculver Country Park in Canterbury.

Pegwell Bay Park in Ramsgate, Radnor Park in Folkestone, and Trosley Country Park in Vigo were also celebrated in the awards.

Seven parks in Medway will continue to proudly display green flags, including Capstone Farm Country Park in Gillingham and Broomhill Park, Strood.

Cllr Howard Doe, portfolio holder for community services at Medway Council, said: "We are very proud of our green spaces in Medway and I’m very pleased that seven of our stunning parks have been recognised once again.

"I would like to thank our contractor Medway Norse, the park rangers who work hard to maintain the parks to such a high standard, and the Friends groups and volunteers who also work tirelessly to ensure residents and visitors can enjoy Medway’s green spaces."

Leybourne Lakes Country Park has been rewarded for the 12th time, with Haysden Country Park also bagging an award for the 13th year in a row.

Both parks are managed by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, with the help of local volunteers.

Cllr Maria Heslop, the council's cabinet member for community services, said: "I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the visitors who spend their time in the park and to the volunteer groups who work so hard each year to help us maintain and develop this beautiful park.

"It is a fitting credit to all of those whose efforts have ensured that Leybourne Lakes Country Park has received a Green Flag Award for the twelfth year in a row.

"We are proud to see the flag flying high once again."

Tunbridge Wells has added another site to its list of award-winning green spaces, with St John's Park receiving one of the prestigious flags for the first time.

It joins Dunorlan Park, Calverley Grounds, Woodbury Park Cemetery and The Grove, which have all retained their green flag status for another year.

Cllr Jane March, culture, leisure and tourism portfolio holder, said: "I am so pleased we’re now able to fly a Green Flag in St John’s Park, it is well deserved.

"All the parks and green spaces in Tunbridge Wells are lovely places that we are very proud of.

"They are enjoyed by visitors and all members of the community, however they wouldn’t be as good as they are without the incredible efforts of their Friends groups and the hard work of the Parks Team and contractors."
