Gruesome graphics to stop smokers

Sorry, this video asset has been removed.

Rotting teeth or lungs is what you will see the next time you fancy a cigarette.

From today the UK will be the first country in the EU to have graphic pictures on every cigarette packet.

Other gruesome pictures will be of a man with throat cancer and a child breathing in smoke.

The pictures will replace the current written warnings on all packs . It is hoped the change will be complete by October 1 next year.

Despite much progress over the past 10 years, which has resulted in 1.9 million fewer smokers since 1982, smoking continues to be the biggest killer in England.

It causes the premature death of over 87,000 people each year in England.

The Department of Health hope the visual wake-up calls will be more effective than the written warnings.

Sir Liam Donaldson, chief medical officer, said: "I welcome the introduction of picture warnings on tobacco product packaging, which show smokers the grim reality of the effects smoking can have on their health.

"These new stark picture warnings emphasise the harsh health realities of continuing to smoke.

" I hope they will make many more think hard about giving up, and get the help they need to stop smoking for good."

Picture warnings will start appearing on all other tobacco products from October 1, 2010.

According to new figures by the DOH, since the introduction of written warnings five years ago, more than 90,000 smokers have been motivated to call the NHS smoking helpline. It provides expert, free, and friendly advice to smokers and those close to them.

Advisers also go through the range of options available from the NHS and can also refer callers to a local NHS Stop Smoking Service. Call 0800 022 4 332 for more information.
