This semi-detached home in one of Gillingham’s most sought-after streets contained a secret.

From the outside it looks unremarkable.

What other residents of Darland Avenue didn’t know was that inside there were nearly four tons of guns and other equipment, including explosives.

The astonishing story emerged at Maidstone Crown Court when wealthy businessman Michael Saffery faced a number of charges connected with his hoard of guns and explosives.

Judge Philip Statman told him he could have blown up his house.

Find out what happened to Saffery, an avid collector of militaria for nearly 60 years, in Monday's print edition of the Medway Messenger
