Gurkhas can stay in the UK, high court rules

A group of Gurkha veterans have won a landmark legal battle for the right to settle in the UK.

The former soldiers, who fought alongside the British Army, took their test case to the High Court to challenge the Government's refusal to let them stay in the country.

More than 2,000 Gurkhas who retired before 1997 - many of who are based in Folkestone - faced being deported back to Nepal has they had no permission to remain in England.

However, a high court judge has ruled the country owes the men a "moral debt of honour" for their long military service, bravery and loyalty.

Gurkha rights campaigner and Folkestone resident Peter Carroll said he hopes today will mark the end of another long and traumatic battle.
