Gillingham boss Mark Stimson was beaming with pride after seeing his side put one foot in the play-offs – and a possible trip to Wembley.

The Gills secured their eighth away win in League 2 at Chesterfield on Saturday to move within a point of securing at least a play-off place.

“I’m really proud of them,” said Stimson. “As a manager you ask the boys to go out and give 100 per cent.

“They do that and they also do that on the training ground – (now) they are getting their rewards.

“If they continue to do that, wherever that takes us, I can stand and say I was proud of them this season. I hope it takes us to where we want to be.

“It will be hard but we have to look forward to it and enjoy it because these times don’t come around very often.”

The Gills sit fifth in the table with two games to go and all eyes will be on Morecambe’s game at Rotherham on Tuesday.

If Morecambe fail to win, the Gills are guaranteed at least a play-off spot. Gillingham’s other play-off challenger Dagenham and Shrewsbury play each other on the last day of the season, so only one of these could edge past the Gills.

Stimson added: “If we have to get another point then that’s what we’ve got to do but we’re going to try and get six and see where that takes us.

"If we get into the play-offs we’ll attack them and be positive but hopefully we don’t have to meet anyone and we go up automatically."
