Actor Derek Fowlds was among guests at the official opening of the first stage of a £23million community living complex for the elderly.

Best known for his roles in Yes Minister, Yes Prime Minister and Heartbeat, he was at the Signature Miramar at Beltinge where phase one of the development was officially unveiled.

Also among the guests were the Lord Mayor Cyril Windsor and his wife Leslie.

The complex in Reculver Road, which includes £1,500-a-week penthouse suites, is in extensive grounds.

There is 24-hour care on site and leisure facilities include a gym and snooker room, a hair and beauty salon, a restaurant and bistro, an IT and television room. Residents can choose to eat in the comfort and privacy of their own suites or the more communal setting of the restaurant.

David Driscoll, chief executive of Signature, said: “Our idea here is to make residents feel they are in their own homes but also part of a community.

“We offer companionship when you want it, privacy when you don’t. We also want them to live, to enjoy things, to try new things.”
