Mini ‘heatwave’ in Kent: UKHSA issues yellow heat health alert as temperatures set to soar

A health alert for heat is in force, with the government warning vulnerable people could be at risk.

The Yellow warning was put in place from 9am by the UK Health Security Agency for the whole South East and is expected to stay until 11pm on Wednesday.

Temperatures could reach 27C in the county today and rise even higher to 30C tomorrow.

The government body warns that high temperatures could increase mortality across the population, particularly in the 65 and over age group or those with health conditions.

It could increase demand for remote healthcare services and could mean the temperatures inside hospitals and care homes reach higher than recommended levels.

There are also warnings the heat could impact services due to effects on the workforce because of indoor environments overheating.

London is expected to record the highest temperature, reaching 32C (90F) tomorrow, but Kent is only a couple of degrees behind.

It may or may not be enough to class the weather officially as a heatwave - that happens only when an area records three consecutive days with temperatures over 28C in London, or over 25C elsewhere.

But the weather is expected to break later on in the week with forecasts of thunderstorms and heavy rain.

Despite this, temperatures are still expected to stay high for the start of August.
