VOLUNTEERS are needed to clean up Cliffe Creek near Rochester, once an atmospheric inlet on the River Thames.

It has become blighted by litter, washed down river from London’s suburbs but RSPB community officer Carol Donaldson is hoping to restore the natural beauty of the bay.

And she wants local people to join her. She said: "The creek needs a helping hand to restore it to how nature intended.

“Last year Cliffe Scout group helped to restore one side of the creek and are planning to bring another group of willing workers this year but we always need more help.”

Carol has teamed up with Thames 21, a London based organisation dedicated to working with communities to create clean, safe waterside environments.

Brett’s Aggregates who own land alongside the creek is also donating transport and helping on the day.

The clean up will take place on Saturday May 19 between 2pm and 4pm. Volunteers should meet at St Helen’s Church, Cliffe, at 2pm and wear old clothes and strong soled shoes or wellies.

The Heritage Lottery Fund funds this event with assistance from Brett’s Aggregates. Transport to the site and all litter picking equipment will be provided.
