THE Kent Messenger has launched a campaign which we hope will prevent further deaths along a notorious stretch of the M20.

The Lights For Life campaign calls for the Government to take immediate action to install lights along the carriageway at Junction 3, where the M20 and the M26 converge.

It was at this junction that three men - teenagers Ricci Parker and Kevin Wratten from Snodland, and motrocyclist Jimmy Atirene - were killed on the night of Monday, December 15, 2003, following a series of collisions which began when the Vauxhall Cavalier driven by Mr Parker hit the back of a lorry and span into the outside lane.

Witnesses at the inquest into their deaths stated that it was almost impossible to see the crashed Cavalier until the last moment because it was so dark. We are calling on the Highways Agency to do something now - before another, similar tragedy unfolds.

The Highways Agency told the Kent Messenger it would look into the possibility of putting lights in place. Now we want to see some action.

The campaign has the support of Mr Atirene’s partner Karen Walden, and we are urging lorry drivers, car drivers, motorcylists - anyone who uses the M20 - to back our campaign for lighting on the London-bound and coast-bound approaches to Junction 3.
