Gillingham earned a deserved point from their League 2 trip to Hereford on Saturday.

The Gills almost snatched the win in the dying moments of the game but home keeper Adam Bartlett tipped Danny Spiller’s shot over the bar.

Gillingham got closest to breaking the deadlock during the first 45 minutes as a well-worked free-kick was laid off to Chris Palmer and he smashed a low shot into the post.

Hereford were being restricted to long range efforts in the opening half but few posed any trouble for keeper Alan Julian.

Home keeper Adam Bartlett made a good early save from Danny Spiller, after he picked up a corner from Palmer.

The half ended with some heated exchanges and Adebayo Akinfenwa was incensed at a challenge from Janos Kovacs. At half-time he directed his anger at the referee and had to be led down the tunnel by manager Andy Hessenthaler.

The second half started well for Hereford, with Mathieu Monset and Joe Colbeck coming close, but Spiller’s late effort was the best of the lot as the Gills ended the game on top.

His shot was heading for the top corner but was denied by Bartlett’s save.
