Danny Lawrence is the third player to quit Herne Bay for Faversham – but should be the last.

Midfielder Lawrence followed Luke Harvey and Jamie Maxted to Salters Lane but with more than 50 players turning out at Bay’s pre-season training, boss Simon Halsey couldn’t care less.

He said: "We’d agreed terms but then he rung me and said he was going to Faversham.

"I’ve no interest in wasting my breath talking about people who don’t want to be at Herne Bay, so that’s the end of the matter. Nobody else is going as far as I know."

Halsey has brought in utility man Calum McGeehan from Sittingbourne for pre-season and believes he could be a key player.

He said: "I like him and it looks like he’ll definitely sign. He can play centre-half but he’s a centre-midfielder, really.

"He’s 6ft 4in and a big unit but he has two good feet. He looked very accomplished at training. I can’t wait to see him in a game."

Halsey faces a tough task whittling down the numbers at Winch’s Field, with the boss keen to give everybody a chance.

He said: "Fifty-two players turned up at training on Saturday and I didn’t see a bad one among them.

"There may be players who are far superior to the ones we already have, but I won’t know until we start playing friendlies.

"I don’t want anyone to leave here thinking we haven’t given them a fair chance."
