UK DOG owners are facing a bill of millions of pounds as thousands of drivers each year seek compensation for vehicle damage caused by pets running out on the road.
A new survey commissioned by Direct Line Pet Care shows that more than two million drivers (seven per cent), have experienced incidents involving dogs, which resulted in damage to their cars.
One in 10 of those (10 per cent), which is more than 200,000 drivers, sought costs to repair the car from the animal's owner.
According to the Animals Act 1971, dog owners are held responsible for any injury or damage caused by their pets straying on to the road. Owners can expect to pay about £500 to cover the costs of vehicle damage, although claims can sometimes run into several thousands of pounds.
The cost of treating injuries suffered by an animal as a result of a road traffic accident is around £285, 30 per cent higher than an average veterinary bill. Yet, only 15 per cent, (around 950,000), of the UK's 6.5 million dogs, are insured.
For a few pounds a month, dog owners can protect themselves against these high costs by taking out pet insurance.
