WHO said politicians were out of touch?

Prime Minister Tony Blair joined the chorus of praise for a brand new AstroTurf pitch at the Addicks’ Sparrow Lane training ground.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Blair said: "I’m very happy to send a message of congratulations to Charlton on their wonderful new sporting facility that will do so much for young people."

But when invited to the opening of the facility by New Eltham MP Clive Efford, the PM declined.

The full-size floodlit pitch, backed by Barclays Bank and the Football Foundation, means that children can receive community coaching in football and hockey on site.

Pupils from Heronsgate School attended the launch, and received football training from the scheme coaches and hockey coaching from Bexley Council.

England rugby world cup winner Will Greenwood and Charlton ace Matt Holland were among the sporting celebrities present.

Assistant community scheme manager Matt Parish believes the new pitch will benefit thousands of children.

He said: "It’s for use by the local community. This will be a unique opportunity for children to train 200 yards from the Charlton first team."

Further improvement projects are under way. There are plans for an interactive learning zone/classroom where schoolchildren will be able to complete national curriculum activities.
