A POSTAL van became trapped when scaffolding collapsed in high winds in a town centre.

The structure was set up outside a building at the top of High Street, opposite Macies Café Bar, in Ramsgate. It came crashing down at around 11.50am on Monday morning.

According to eyewitnesses, the van was driving up the High Street and the driver had tried to swerve and avoid it, but became trapped underneath.

Jo Hamchett, who runs Mortgage Master, as well as being a board member of Ramsgate Town Partnership, said: "We had the fire brigade, ambulance and police, and the road was roped off."

Police confirmed the postal worker had been trapped in the van for a short time. The road was closed from the time of the accident until 3.15pm, when the scaffolding was cleared.

No one was hurt.
