Put Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga and Liza Minnelli in a Union Flag-emblazoned blender and the outcome would still not be as good as British pop diva Elouise. As she takes her show on the road, Chris Price caught up with the petite northerner with the thundering voice.
Try to make a list of British divas and after Shirley Bassey, not many spring to mind. Yet in a corner of Soho, singer Elouise has been tackling powerful numbers for quite some time and is making it her mission to bring show-stopping hits back to the charts.
“All we need now is a bit more exposure, some TV and radio, to give the show and myself the success it deserves,” said former musical star Elouise, who is about to tour the UK with her show Little Belter.
“I am trying to do it on my own, not on a reality show, and it is hard. They wipe the market out. It is hard for new artists to break through and because my sound is big power ballad stuff it is hard in an industry which is very auto-tuned and electro-pop.
“But it has got to come back at some point as that music is timeless and these songs are really popular now.”
Take a listen to the northern lass’s renditions of Live and Let Die, The Winner Takes It All and Born This Way on her website and her appeal is instant. Every track has Eloise belting out another searing note.
From a young age she realised she was blessed with a powerful voice. After college and university, Elouise’s big break came when she landed the part of Lola in the UK tour of Barry Manilow’s musical Copacabana in 2005. Yet once she decided to concentrate on her singing career four years ago, it was not long before the singer, real name Louise Freeman, landed a residency at London club Madame JoJo’s.
Now, for the first time, she is taking her pop diva show on tour, with the help of Kylie Minogue’s musical director Steve Anderson and writer and co-director Terry Ronald, who has worked with Girls Aloud, Kylie and Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Throw in choreography from Nikki Trow – who has worked for Leona Lewis, Blue, Westlife and Cheryl Cole – and the size of the show becomes apparent.
“We have a three-piece band who create a sound like the Philharmonic Orchestra,” said Elouise, 30, who is also flanked by dancers in the show.
“Now I am wondering why I have put such a hard set together. I didn’t realise I would be singing 20 of these songs in one go. In a normal show, even if you have got the lead, you don’t sing that many. I also have six costume changes. It is absolutely mental.
“The reason my voice sustains the notes is because it’s a natural belt. I have not been trained. That is the only reason I can get through.
“The audience come with me on a journey and are willing me to survive. That is the point of Little Belter. There are two songs in the show which are softer but it is basically show stopper after show stopper. I just love singing those sorts of songs. You cannot beat that sort of music but these are new interpretations and not straight covers.”
Elouise facts
» Watching the Wizard of Oz aged four was the reason Elouise started singing. She said: “It made me want to dance and sing. I have always loved that music as well as Dusty Springfield and Diana Ross and the Supremes. I love big divas with fabulous dresses.”
» Her first musical role came in Les Miserables as a child. “I sang Frosty the Snowman at the audition. It was so embarrassing but I got the part.”
» It used to take her a week to recover when she first performed in her monthly residency at Madame JoJo’s, which is on the third Wednesday of every month. She said: “My voice and body were so exhausted. To sing with that much power, I don’t know where it comes from. That is impressive for people to watch but people do not realise how much it takes out of you. It is like a vocal marathon.”
» She would love to duet with Michael Buble, having been described by some critics as the female version of the Canadian singer.
» Elouise had her first play on Elaine Paige’s show on Radio 2 just over a month ago and she is working on her debut album with Steve Anderson and Terry Ronald.
Little Belter, starring Elouise, comes to Dartford’s Orchard Theatre on Thursday, March 29. Tickets £20, concessions £1 off. Box office 01322 220000.
