Hoath woman warns broadband users of phone scam

A grandmother is warning Broadband users to be aware of a telephone scam.

Jan Marsh, 62, from Hoath, near Canterbury, was phoned three times by an Irish woman pretending to be from BT asking if she wanted to switch internet providers.

The retired office administrator says the calls were of such a professional-sounding nature that she divulged her account details.

"The information she was giving me went right down to infinite detail about costs and services," Mrs Marsh, of Church Road, said.

"She even read out a disclaimer and was able to transfer me to someone else, a man with an Irish accent.

"I'm not stupid, but this was all so convincing. I had three separate calls and they were asking for me by name."

After giving the woman her bank details, Mrs Marsh called BT herself and discovered she had been the victim of a scam.

She has since cancelled her bank account and has not had any money taken out.

Mrs Marsh added: "That's the funny thing, not having any money stolen, but it's caused an enormous amount of hassle getting things
changed.

"I wanted to warn other people that there is this scam in operation."
