A police officer who came face to face with a knife-wielding man has been given a bravery award.

PC Nigel Cook and a colleague confronted a man known to have mental health problems. But, when spraying the man in his face at a Cliftonville callout didn't work, PC Cook got so close he risked being stabbed.

The man then dropped his knife, according to the citation in the Chief Constable's courage and bravery awards.

PC Cook was one of a few to be given the honour at the ceremony at the Kent Police College, Force Headquarters in Maidstone.

Also awarded were officers who overpowered a knife-wielding man in Dover, an officer who rescued a woman found hanging in a hotel room, and the team behind the Christopher Alaneme murder investigation.
