Birchington village centre was an array of colour for the village horticultural society’s recent autumn show.

Although a lack of warm weather over the past few months meant there were slightly fewer entries than usual in the vegetable sections, there was still keen competition, said chairman David Barton.

There were around 150 entries in the flower, vegetable and cookery classes reflecting a great deal of care and skill in their creation.

Wetter weather had helped bring on tomatoes, said Mr Barton, and Ken Hougham’s entry in this section was a worthy winner.

“We had a steady crowd of people coming to see the show and enjoy the ambience of the occasion,” he added, “and the raffle made more than £60 for our chosen charity, the Pilgrims Hospices.”

Keen gardeners are already thinking ahead to the society’s spring show next year, and the new season of monthly meetings under way.
