A quick ring-round of some petrol stations today around Kent produced these responses:

The Esso service station in Wincheap, Canterbury, ran out of fuel yesterday afternoon, and the Shell New Romney expects to last only to the end of the day.

The manager of Shell Lychgate service station on the Thanet Way thinks they will only have petrol for the next two days.

He said : "After that we're going to open but only the shop, no fuel."

But other stations were confident there would be no problems during the strike.

Manager of the Richmond Service Station in Herne Bay, Craig Ellis, said: "We're doing fine. We had a tanker in yesterday evening and we've got another one on Sunday which I expect no problems in receiving, so we've got lots of fuel.

"There's no need to panic buy at all."

At Ashwal Garage in Cranbrook, which sells Shell fuel, manager Tony Pritchard said: "During the last two days we have sold 15 to 30 per cent more fuel than usual.

"People are being stupid. If they had carried on with their usual buying patterns of £10 or £15 a week rather than £30 there would not be a problem."

The Shell petrol station in Gillingham took a delivery yesterday and still had fuel earlier today.

Meanwhile, Morrisons petrol station in Strood had petrol earlier today, but were slightly busier than normal.

BP petrol station in Milton Road, Gravesend, said they had petrol, and were expecting a delivery later today. But it had been very hectic, with twice as much business as usual.

At the Shell service station in Tunbridge Wells business was reported as brisk, but they predicted fuel would not last until Monday.

A spokesman predicted it would take at least a week to get stocks back to normal.

Folkestone's Total station was said to be very busy, with queues onto the street.

They were confident they wouldn't run out.

The BP garage in Dover reported a quiet day, with no queues.

Ashford's Shell said supplies were fine, but they couldn't promise there would be no panic over the weekend.

At Bybrook, Sainsbury's was said to be a little busier than usual, but supplies were fine.

And in Thanet, the BP in Canterbury Road said there were no problems and no queues.

Here are some tips on how to make your fuel last longer:

• Slow down – dropping your speed can save hundreds of pounds each year. Also try wearing lighter shoes to allow for gentle acceleration.

• Turn off the air conditioning - it may be refreshing but it drains fuel, so open a window instead.

• Check your tyre pressures - if your wheels are not properly inflated, you could be burning five per cent more fuel than needed.

• Lose weight…from the boot - all those bits and pieces that accumulate in your car can add weight that hinders its performance.

• Drive in the right gear - make sure you don’t burn extra fuel by not changing to a higher gear, and use cruise control if you have it.
