THE cost of motoring is already a big drain on our pockets and with fuel prices rising, RAC has some money-saving advice.

Use your gears wisely change gear every 2000 revs or drive in the highest gear you can, without labouring the engine. It's estimated that a vehicle travelling at a speed of 37 mph in third gear uses 25 per cent more fuel than when at the same speed in fifth gear. Switch off your engine whenever it is safe to do so, especially when stuck in traffic for more than a few minutes.

If you have air conditioning, think before you use it. Not using it will reduce fuel consumption. Drive off as soon as you can - don't leave your engine running when you first start up. Drive gently until the engine has reached its normal operating temperature.

Avoid heavy acceleration and heavy braking. Think carefully about what you take on a journey. If you do not need something do not pack it. Remove roof racks if they are not necessary - the lighter the load, the lower the fuel consumption.
