How to keep track of your vehicle

TRACKER Network, the stolen vehicle recovery company, is advising motorists to be extra vigilant to ensure they do not become winter car theft victims. Last year the company recorded a 15 per cent increase in stolen vehicle recoveries during last winter and a nine per cent increase the year before.

Trackers says there are a number of precautions that motorists can take to reduce the chance of having their vehicle stolen:

* Never leave property, even a coat, on view in your car. Thieves may also be window shopping for cars loaded with Christmas presents.

* Always lock your vehicle when unoccupied. Tracker research highlights that 54 per cent of drivers leave their vehicles unlocked when shopping or even parked outside their house.

* In the evening, park your vehicle in a well-lit area.

* Always look after your car keys.

* If you start your engine to warm it during winter, do not leave the vehicle unattended.
