Six people were injured in a huge fire which engulfed Elephant and Castle station in south London.

Explosions rung out as 15 crews and 100 firefighters battled flames, with thick black smoke billowing over the capital.

Three commercial units underneath the railway arches were completely alight and six cars and a telephone box also went up in flames.

Just before 4pm London Fire Brigade confirmed the fire was under control but crews will stay at the scene for much of the afternoon to dampen down.

The fire was inside the overground station and not the underground section but Northern Line services are not stopping at the station.

Road closures are in place and people are advised to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed.

Six people received treatment at the scene and one was taken to hospital, the London Ambulance Service confirmed.

It is not known how the fire started but the Met Police has confirmed it is not thought to be terror related.

The station serves routes into Kent and all services have been cancelled.

Southeastern has confirmed the 5.38pm service from Blackfriars to Ashford via Maidstone East will now depart from London Victoria.

The Sevenoaks services calling at Kent stations Bromley South, Bickley, St Mary Cray, Swanley, Eynsford, Shoreham, Otford and Bat & Ball are also cancelled.

Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted: "My thoughts are with all those affected by the very serious fire in Elephant and Castle, which is now under control. I’m in close contact with the Fire Commissioner and want to thank our emergency services who acted quickly to ensure residents & passengers were safely evacuated."

Thameslink warned later this evening that services could still be affected tomorrow and people should check before travelling.
